Trump Attacks Obama. Calls Him ‘Grossly Incompetent’

Trump continued his attacks on former President Obama, calling him ‘grossly incompetent’ while speaking to reporters.

The president’s latest comment on Obama suggests a clear pattern emerging in the last few days. After receiving flak for his management of the pandemic, Trump appears to have found a way to deflect attention from the crisis – attack Obama.

Former presidents generally don’t come out in public talking about sitting presidents. However, events in the last ten days show Obama may play an active role in Biden’s campaign and respond to the attacks from Trump.

The attacks on Obama from Trump have a clear starting point – Michael Flynn. Obamagate, the theory Trump is purporting these days, suggests President Obama actively directed the FBI to entrap Michael Flynn into lying and inevitably lead him into getting charged.

Trump Attacks on Obama Could Become a Trend

After facing criticism for his handling of the crisis, Trump’s recent instinct to attack his opponents is understandable. There is quiet acceptance amongst all parties involved that Trump botched the response to the crisis.

Cornered, President Trump could continue his attacks on Obama and ratchet up the rhetoric on Obamagate.

The former president is also not exactly ignoring Trump.

In an audio clip leaked a few days back, Obama called out the handling of the pandemic, saying it was a ‘chaotic disaster’. He also blasted the DOJ for dropping charges against Michael Flynn, the same charges the former NSA pleaded guilty to.

In a virtual commencement speech for students graduating from HBCUs, Obama said the current pandemic shows that those in power have no idea what they are doing. The comment, seen as a direct aim at Trump, breaks precedent as Obama has not talked about Trump publically since leaving office. Democrats will hope attacks from Obama on Trump keep coming.

Obama Could Be Essential to Biden’s Campaign

Today, Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro called Obama Biden’s press secretary.

The comment may look like an insult to Obama, but he may have to take on such a role in order to get Biden elected.

Obama is the most popular Democrat in the country. Since Biden does not excite the Democratic base enough, Obama’s support to his candidacy is crucial. If Biden wants to win, he will have to lean on Obama to mount attacks on Trump.

Obama inspired Democrats in 2008 when he won the White House. Biden, for many Democrats, is only a solution to remove Trump from office. This handicap could hurt Democrats in November when turning out the base would become a priority.

While Biden has received support from progressives like Sanders, it remains unlikely that the progressive base would turn up for him. The presumptive Democratic nominee has not made many policy concessions many progressives are demanding.

According to a recent NYMag piece, Biden is seriously considering running an FDR-style presidency. Progressives remain largely cold on the possibility. This is because Biden can easily come forward and endorse progressive policies if he indeed plans to support them.

As more attacks on Obama and Biden keep coming, Democrats will hope their candidate isn’t caricatured as Trump is painting him.
