Pandemic Has Exposed American Leadership – Obama

According to Obama, the current coronavirus pandemic is exposing the leadership of the country. In an online commencement speech for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Obama expanded upon the societal tensions in America.

In the address, Obama first congratulated the students for graduating in such challenging times. He highlighted how black communities are facing a darker version of the coronavirus crisis. Furthermore, the former president didn’t forget to mention the recent murder of Ahmed Arbery in Georgia.

Coming to the current leadership, Obama said the pandemic shows how the people in charge have no idea what they’re doing. The comment takes aim at President Trump and his historic mismanagement and misguided leadership during the pandemic.

Obama in the News as Trump is Questioned on Pandemic Leadership

This is not the first instance Obama has made the news recently. Over a week back, an audio clip of him lambasting the DOJ for dropping charges against former NSA Michael Flynn surfaced. Obama also took shots at Trump’s handling of the pandemic crisis.

Generally, former presidents don’t comment on sitting presidents. A few days later, Trump started amplifying Obamagate, a conspiracy theory alleging Obama’s role in starting the Russiagate hoax. After Trump’s repeated tweets on Obamagate, Obama tweeted the following.

This has not stopped the president from promoting Obamagate. He is trying to pressurize Senator Graham into calling Obama to testify in front of the Senate. While Graham confirmed he won’t call former president Obama to testify, Trump has not stopped his narrative.

Former President Obama calling out Trump again on his leadership during the pandemic will likely elicit another response from the president.

The Progressive View

Whenever former president Obama says anything, he makes news. So, when Obama calls out Trump’s leadership during the pandemic, he gives Democrats some new things to talk about.

Obama is quite easily the most popular Democrat in the country. The Biden campaign will lean a lot of Obama if it wants to win in November. After yet another comment against Trump, it looks like Obama will campaign strongly against Trump in this election cycle.

However, Democrats won’t be able to win the progressive vote with Obama. While the former president could become an incredible asset for the Democrats to rally their base, people might make the distinction between Obama the candidate and Obama the campaigner.

Ultimately, people have to choose between Biden and Trump. If Democrats and Obama can make a strong case for Trump’s poor leadership during the pandemic, they have a strong chance of winning back the White House.
