Trump Wants Obama to Testify Before the Senate

Trump wants former president Obama to testify in front of the Senate. The president made this demand on Twitter.

Former President Obama is in the news again after it’s come to light that the FBI tricked Flynn into lying about his contacts with the Russian ambassador in the United States. The FBI did this when Obama was still president.

While there is no evidence of Obama directing the FBI to trap Flynn, Trump has fanned the flames on this story and raised calls for the former president to testify.

In the tweet, Trump picked out Senator Graham from South Carolina to call Obama to testify. Graham currently heads the Senate Judiciary Committee. His panel is leading the probe into the origins of the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Will Graham Oblige Trump and Call Obama to Testify?

So far, Senator Graham has indicated he won’t call former President Obama to testify despite Trump insisting on the same.

After the tweet went live, Graham said that there would be complete oversight into the origins of FBI’s Russia investigation. However, the senator from South Carolina is not keen on calling Obama to testify.

Graham said that while nobody was above the law, presidents have certain executive privileges when they’re in office. By calling Obama to testify, Graham said he fears he will set the wrong precedent.

Hearings on the FBI’s Russia investigation are set to begin in June.

OBAMAGATE Calls Gather Steam On the Right

Conservative media outlets are latching on to the president’s call for an investigation into the Obama presidency’s actions. Obamagate is now a very famous catchphrase. Generally, sitting presidents do not meddle into the affairs of previous administrations. President Trump won’t walk the line on the precedent though and his demand for Obama to testify is proof of the same.

The former president’s opinion on the DOJ dropping charges against Flynn is well-known. In a leaked audio-clip, the former president said that the incident brought into question the ‘basic understanding of the law’. He also called Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis a ‘chaotic disaster‘.

While it’s unlikely Obama will actually testify in front of the Senate, President Trump would hope he can keep pressurizing the Democrats. Many critics of the president believe he is drumming up this issue to reflect his own mishandling of the pandemic.

Trump’s recent calls for a quick reopening of the country are a major reason why some of his core base of voters is shifting. According to a recent survey, voters over 65 are lining up behind Biden as they view Trump’s reopening strategy extremely reckless. White women voters, also a key part of Trump’s coalition, are also shifting away from him. Trump could use attacks on Obama and demanding him to testify as a way to bring his base together.
