Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden will not stop any investigation against Donald Trump if elected to office.
Joe Biden said this during an interview with Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC. During the interview, Biden was asked if he would use his power to stop an investigation against Trump if elected president.
Biden said a president is not entitled to direct an investigation. He also said he would take a hands-off approach and allow the investigations to take their course.
The last time a sitting president exonerated his predecessor happened a few decades ago. When Nixon resigned from office in 1974, he received a pardon from President Ford for his role in the Watergate Scandal.
Trump and Biden Prepare for Gruelling Campaign
The comment from Biden is the latest attempt to take on Trump and gather momentum for a gruelling campaign cycle.
After dropping high-octane ads against each other over the past two weeks, both candidates are warming up their base. Polls currently have both candidates relatively close to each other. While Biden leads nationally, President Trump is ahead in the key battleground states.
Biden recently set up multiple task forces to shape his policy platform to rival Trump. These task forces include Democrats of varying ideologies and experience. The former vice president is seeking to unite the party and this is another attempt in the same direction. After a primary cycle which saw the centrist and progressive vote starkly divided between Biden and Sanders, the presumptive nominee understands the need to bring the party together to beat Trump.
According to a piece in the NYMag, Biden is considering having an FDR-style presidency, at least in scope. The current coronavirus pandemic, according to the same piece, seems to have convinced Biden that massive government spending is needed to heal the country. However, Joe Biden is yet to stamp his approval on any of the policies progressives endorse. During the campaign, Biden in fact admitted he would veto Medicare for all as president if it ever passed Congress and reached his table.
Trump Raises Obamagate, Rallies Base
President Trump is calling for Obama to testify in front of the Senate. This news comes after it appears that the FBI tricked Flynn into lying in order to charge him.
Senator Lindsey Graham is already heading a panel looking into the origins of the FBI’s Russia probe. However, Graham said he won’t call former president Obama to testify as it would set a bad precedent.
Many believe Trump is only raising the calls for Obamagate because he is facing flak on his mismanagement of the pandemic crisis from Biden and other Democrats.
While there is no concrete evidence of wrongdoings by former President Obama, Trump’s ability to amplify an issue and rally his base are working in his favour. Conservative media outlets are already backing the president on this and diligently lapping up Obamagate.
The race is only just beginning. After repeatedly tweeting ‘OBAMAGATE’ from his Twitter handle, Trump finally got a response from Obama himself.

The number of likes and retweets on Obama’s reply is indicative of the level of popularity the former president still has. Obama could play a key role in helping the Biden campaign tackle Trump.
