Dr Fauci will appear in a Senate hearing today along with other members of the task force. He will reportedly explain to the Senators the dangers of reopening the country recklessly.
Dr Fauci has been the face of the coronavirus response. Along with Deborah Birx, Fauci represents the team of scientists and healthcare experts advising the President. On many occasions, Dr Fauci has taken a stance which stood in contrast to the President’s view.
His testimony before the Senate comes at a crucial stage. The White House earlier didn’t allow Dr Fauci to testify in the House. President Trump said at the time that Dr Fauci won’t testify in the House because it was filled with ‘Trump haters’. The Senate has a Republican majority.

Dr Fauci Testifies as Reopening the Country becomes a Divisive Issue
In an email to the New York Times, Dr Fauci explained that he will use the hearing as a platform to explain the dangers of reopening abruptly. The hearing comes at a crucial stage for the country.
In a recent Pew poll, 68% of Americans do not want to rush reopening the country. In the poll, 38% conservative Republicans were not in favour of recklessly reopening. This is still a large number, enough to make enough Republicans conscious about opening the country back up.
The case for reopening is devolving into a divisive issue. The situation in Michigan reached a flashpoint over a week back. In Texas, news of the barbershop owner getting jailed for seven days only for opening her business quickly won her a lot of support. In California, Elon Musk is threatening to defy county orders and open the Tesla headquarters in Alameda Country back up.
Dr Fauci has been generally cautious about his position on the pandemic. Unlike the President, the doctor is not optimistic about the idea of an aggressive timeline for vaccine production. He is also not keen on an abrupt reopening of the country and favours a step-by-step process. During the hearing, he will get a chance to present his position to the Senate.
