CA 25 Special Election – Could A California District Turn Red Today?

CA 25 (California District 25) will be going to poll today in a special election. This is the same seat former congresswoman Katie Hill won in 2018 and late ended up resigning from. Her resignation is the reason for a special election today.

And after a long time, a Republican stands a chance to win in blue haven California.

The CA 25 election is not just special in name. It is after a long time a California district could turn red.

The election could not have taken place in a more turbulent time. The coronavirus pandemic has hit the country badly. California is no exception.

Why is there a Special Election in CA 25 Today?

The reason for a special election in CA 25 is Katie Hill’s resignation from the congressional seat last year in October. The resignation came after she admitted to having intimate relations with a female staffer in her office.

A host of changes were passed as House rules between 2017 and 2018 in the peak of the Me Too movement. One of these rules barred lawmakers to have sexual relations with anyone in their congressional office. Hill violated this rule and despite being a promising candidate for future Democratic leadership, she ended up resigning.

After her resignation, Speaker Pelosi said Hill made an error in judgment. Furthermore, she added there was a need for an environment of integrity in Congress.

Hill’s vacant seat goes to poll today. Hill herself sent out a video more than a week back urging people to vote.

The Candidates and Endorsements

Replacing Katie Hill on the Democratic ticket is Christy Smith. Smith is already serving as a state assemblywoman in California. After Hill’s resignation, Smith quickly garnered endorsements from senior Democratic leadership. From Speaker Pelosi to former President Obama, many major Democratic leaders are behind Smith.

However, Smith faces a tough challenge to win on Tuesday. CA 25 is a Republican stronghold and Hill’s victory in 2018 came in part due to a massive blue wave. It is unclear whether the same wave will get Smith over the line.

On the Republican side is Mike Garcia. President Trump endorsed him to help match the flurry of endorsements his opponent received from Democratic leadership. Garcia is the favourite to win the race. His campaign for the seat has taken aim at the Democratic leadership in Sacramento and even Katie Hill. During the campaign, Garcia said Katie Hill had embarrassed CA 25 with her actions.

The race is important and the stack of endorsements on both sides is indicative of the same. Democrats need to show strength as they move towards November to take on President Trump and the GOP. Generally, the Democrats do well in California. However, the Republicans stand a good chance to win this time.
