Bill Maher did a New Rules segment on Joe Biden and the allegations of sexual assault made against him by former aide Tara Reade.
Bill Maher is well-known for his opposition to President Trump. In the segment, Maher asked Reade why she only came out with the allegations against Biden after it became clear he will be the nominee.
Maher Takes on Reade
Reade came about with the allegations against Biden last year along with seven other women but receded to the background after facing online abuse. Her allegations gained momentum again when she repeated them on a podcast, the Katie Halper Show.
Maher went on to ask Reade why she didn’t come forward with the allegations before Super Tuesday. He also asked why was it necessary to come forward when Biden is the only hope of the Democrats to take down Trump.
Democrats ‘Woke’ Themselves Into the Corner
Further along in the segment, Maher addressed the idea about vetting the allegations made by Tara Reade to maintain the credibility of the Democratic party.
According to Maher, credibility had become an issue because Democrats were not careful about embracing the Me Too movement two years back. Maher said Democrats shouldn’t have accepted the ‘Believe All Women’ push two years back during the Kavanagh confirmation hearings. He added that believing everything makes Democrats look gullible, and the stance they took two years back is now making them prime targets for Republicans.
Maher questioning Reade comes at a crucial stage for Democrats trying to build credibility.
Biden Playing Defence as Pressure Mounts
Even though Maher defended Biden from Reade, things appear far from over for the former vice president.
While Joe Biden denied allegations of sexual assault against him, even voters of his own party are unconvinced. Every new day is bringing forward new pieces of evidence corroborating the allegations made by Reade. Fringe rumours about Hillary entering the race are slowly surfacing after stories about NY Governor Cuomo have died out.
Unlike previous candidates who gained momentum in the weeks preceding the convention, Biden is struggling. The only positive for the Biden campaign is that President Trump appears weak as well. His base of supporters appears to be splitting according to new polls. Voters over 65, who went with Trump by seven points in 2016, sit with Biden right now. While November is still months away, Biden will hope the allegations die out. The former vice president needs to build momentum now more than ever.
Biden would hope more figures like Maher defend him from Reade and her allegations.
