Hillary Clinton is back in the news.
Just when it seemed all doors led to Biden, Hillary returns yet again. This time, Hillary Clinton is in the news as her dear friend Joe is on the ropes. Joe’s campaign for president is a house of cards waiting to fall. Whether it’s his mental capacity to run for office or the sexual assault allegations against him, a gust called Hillary Clinton could end his campaign.
Democratic hacks are swooning at the possibility of Hillary Clinton’s name on the ticket. Obama’s name is being thrown around as her VP, which is still a political bridge too far to consider.
One faction is strangely quiet as centrists openly talk about bringing Biden down. Where are the progressives? The DNC could very well tell Biden to drop out in a few days’ time and hand the candidacy to Hillary. Where are progressives to stop this from happening? How does Hillary take away the nomination without a ballot being cast in her name?
Progressives Need to Be Ready to Fight
When an Olympic athlete is stripped of a gold medal because of doping charges, the gold passes to the one who finished second.
This is not rocket science. It’s simple logic. Sadly, progressives appear silent on this matter. While some progressives are calling for Biden to be vetted properly for allegations of sexual assault, they’re talking about the rumours surrounding Hillary.
If Biden drops out, there is no way Hillary Clinton should be allowed to ride in like a white knight. Bernie Sanders is the natural choice to replace Biden on the ticket. He will finish with the second-most delegates when the primary process is over. Ideally, the nomination should go to the person with the second-best delegate number.
Naturally, the DNC wouldn’t do anything which favours a progressive. They would insist on the second round of ballots and allow the superdelegates to come in. When this happens, consider Sanders out of the running.
Even if this happens, progressives should, as a matter of principle, make sure only those who actually ran for the presidency are in the running. Parachuting Hillary Clinton into the mix would mean the primary process was nothing but a farce.
A Test for Sanders
If Biden does end up dropping out, Sanders would face a real test. On many occasions in the primary cycle, Sanders lacked the killer instinct to take his rivals out. He let a doddering Joe Biden survive until South Carolina. He failed to truly mount an assault on the Democratic establishment. When he dropped out, he quickly endorsed Biden as if he’d waited all his life for such a seminal moment.
Biden’s dropping out would put Bernie in a difficult position. Does he make sure the DNC doesn’t nominate a candidate like Hillary Clinton who hasn’t had a vote cast in her name? Does he finally use his massive popularity to make sure the DNC follows a fair process to replace Biden?
There are already rumours about Biden’s VP pick becoming the nominee. This is, again, unacceptable. Biden has no right to choose the Democratic nominee. The people voted for him, not his running mate.
It will be up to Sanders to ensure a fair process in the selection of a Democratic nominee if Biden drops out. If he fails again and allows the likes of Hillary Clinton to get on the ticket, his legacy would truly be scarred forever.
