President Trump will ignore CDC guidelines to reopen the country as the coronavirus pandemic rages on. A senior official confirmed the same to CNN on Thursday.
The White House asked the CDC to provide recommendations on how to reopen the country safely as the pandemic continues to be a threat. It appears now that the Trump admin will reject the recommendations.
The CDC submitted a seventeen-page report outlining how the country should be reopened. The senior official, while talking to CNN, said that the White House Task Force had asked for guidelines to open back up. The CDC gave the guidelines to the Task Force, as is its mandate
‘Too Prescriptive’ Trump Admin Official on CDC Guidelines
A Trump admin official called the guidelines ‘too prescriptive’, as reported by CNN. According to the official, the White House Task Force was looking for guidelines rather than instructions on how to reopen. The CDC guidelines also didn’t fit the different ‘phases’ outlined by the White House Task Force.
The CDC guidelines were a subject of great internal debate in the Task Force. According to the admin official, task force members eventually felt the guidelines were too intricate and specific for national implementation.
To Open or Not to Open
The CDC guidelines covered six essential areas – mass transport officials, restaurants & bars, child care, schools, faith-based communities, and vulnerable worker employers. For each of these areas, the guidelines advised reopening in incremental stages.
The CDC official, speaking to CNN, said the White House was subject to lobbying from various industries to duck the guidelines and expedite reopening.
Trump himself is very keen to reopen the country and return back to normal. He tweeted in support of protestors in Michigan standing against Governor Whitmer’s request to extend her office’s emergency powers.
The President, on various occasions during his term, cited strong economic performance as his admin’s standout achievement. The pandemic and its impact on the economy will have a significant role in shaping his reelection campaign. Operation Warp Speed, a project started to mass-produce the coronavirus vaccine, is still far away from finding a vaccine.
